DU student expelled from Bijoy Ekattor Hall for 6 months over assault
Abdullah Al Mahfuz, a resident of Bijoy Ekattor
Hall at Dhaka University and a Bangla department student, has been expelled
from the dorm for six months for violating disciplinary rules.
Professor SM Ali Reza, provost of the hall, told
The Business Standard this morning (8 August) that evidence has been found that
Mahfuz physically assaulted another student of the hall.
Mahfuz has also admitted to the incident, he
added.
"On that basis, he was expelled from the
hall for six months with effect from 6 August," Ali added.
A notice issued by the Bijoy Ekattor Hall
authorities last night (7 August) said that around 11:50pm on 19 July, an
"undesirable incident" occurred between Mahfuz and Ahmed Shahriar
Neer, a 2023–24 session student of the Department of Television, Film and
Photography, over the use of a washroom adjacent to the guest room in the
hall's Jamuna block.
According to the notice, the hall authorities
formed a three-member inquiry committee following the incident.
The committee found evidence confirming Mahfuz's
involvement and considered the incident a violation of the disciplinary rules
of the university and the hall.
His expulsion came based on the committee's
recommendation, the notice added.
Meanwhile, amid media reports alleging that
Mahfuz is a Shibir activist, DU Islami Chhatra Shibir Media and Publicity
Secretary Miftahul Hossain Al Maruf said in a statement that the student in
question has no affiliation of any kind with the organisation.
