Opposition lawmakers wear black as Delhi tightens security
Indian opposition lawmakers, including Lok Sabha
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and
Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav, staged a protest on the Parliament premises
today (22 July), dressed in black over the NEET question paper leak and police
action against CJP protesters.
The protest came a day after Rahul, Priyanka and
other opposition MPs staged a sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's
residence for nearly three hours before being forcibly removed by Delhi Police,
prompting widespread condemnation from opposition parties.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened across
Delhi, with 20 additional companies of paramilitary personnel deployed in the
city.
Officials said the government ordered the
deployment to reinforce security amid the CJP protests and demonstrations by
various political parties.
All the personnel are from the Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF) and are being airlifted from West Bengal following an order
from the federal Home Ministry for their immediate deployment in the national
capital last night (21 July).
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition
Mallikarjun Kharge raised the alleged National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test
(NEET) question paper leak, describing it as a scam that had jeopardised the
future of hundreds of thousands of students.
